The People's Republic of Nebraska Seizes a Child
Originally posted on October 30, 2007. ^.^ Rush Limbaugh detailed the story of a Nebraska family. They had a baby roughly six weeks ago, and due to religious reasons, failed to submit the baby for a state-mandated blood test that would be used to screen for about five genetic conditions, such as "cystic fibrosis, hemoglobinopathy, like sickle cell diseases," according to family attorney Jeff Downing, who called in to the radio show on Tuesday (Oct 30). Because the family was violating a law that does not have an opt-out clause, *fully armed police* showed up, and took the child out of the arms of his oldr brother. Now, Rush took the tact that if you surrender more and more of your rights to socialized healthcare, you will have more laws like the one in Nebraska and four other states, which mandate this sort of thing with no opt-out clause, and there will be more visits by armed police to impose the government's will upon the citizenry. Given the role of religious freedom in this country, I can not believe that any such law in the country that does not want to be the subject of a multitude of lawsuits would not have an opt-out clause for those who have religious objections to the taking of blood. Now, I am not a member of any of those religions, but I do understand and respect them, and I would support opt-out clauses in laws that would impact on religious conscience. This is not a law against kidnapping that we're talking about (could the government be sued for something like this), and we're not talking about the Westboro Baptist Church, or some other radical group. When a police force can enter a person's home and take their child for such a nonsensical reason, violating the parents' right to the free expression of religion...it is a pretty scary time. Right in time for Halloween!
